Land Army girl

"Land Army girl" by Laura Knight, Date unknown

Catalogue ref: INF 3/108Links to the Catalogue

A food production poster illustrated with a horse-drawn plough and Land Army girl. The Ministry of Agriculture was keen to focus on the effort that the women were making. It rejected a design from Laura Knight on the basis that: ‘the emphasis in your design is so very strongly on the horses and so little on the girl that the message which we wish to convey would not really get to the public'. A new design, possibly illustrated here, was produced. The illustration was changed from three girls working a plough to one just one girl, entirely replacing the man's role.
