Catalogue ref: INF 3/65Links to the Catalogue

Sketches of Anthony Eden in military and civilian dress. Eden was first elected as a Conservative MP in 1923. Having served in the First World War, Eden was strongly anti-war, but still resigned as Foreign Secretary in 1938 in objection to Chamberlain's appeasement policies. During the Second World War he rejoined the government as Dominions Secretary, and in Churchill's coalition became Secretary of State for War, in which appointment he set up the Home Guard. Eden then moved on to become head of the Foreign Office, and Churchill recommended him as a successor should he himself be killed.
