Caricature of John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort VC, GCB, CBE, DSO & 2 Bars, MVO, MC, Commander of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France in 1939.

A veteran of The Great War, Viscount Gort won the Victoria Cross (VC) in France in September 1918. He was criticised for his handling of the BEF during the German offensive. Despite coping well with the crisis, Viscount Gort was never again offered a significant field command.
