King George V' class battleship

"King George V' class battleship" by L. Ashwell Wood, 1939-1945

Catalogue ref: INF 3/1487Links to the Catalogue

A realistic image of a 'King George V' class battleship in action at sea. Five battleships of this class were constructed, The King George V, Prince of Wales, Duke of York, Anson and Howe. All of these ships survived the war apart from Prince of Wales who was sunk off Malaya along with HMS Repulse on December 10th 1941. The remaining four ships were scrapped in 1957.

This illustration by Ashwell-Wood was probably commissioned for the book ‘Britain's wonderful fighting forces' (Odhams Press LTD) and would have appeared in black and white had it been used.
