The report concludes that sticks were probably used to restore control but that it was not possible to ascertain exactly who was responsible.

WO 204/12753 1945 Yugoslav atrocities in Venezia Giulia: vol 1Relates to allegations of arrests, deportation and executions carried out by the Yugoslavs in Venezia Giulia during the Yugoslav occupation of Trieste. The British army are to carry out excavations in the area, following the insistence of the British government and its American allies. It is deemed that a full investigation is necessary to avoid the US and UK governments being accused of suppressing evidence regarding alleged Yugoslav terrorist activities.
WO 204/12754 1945 Yugoslav atrocities in Venezia Giulia: vol 2Continuing on the previous file, this file centres on the excavation of Basovizza, a pit where it is alleged that the Yugoslav army buried German soldiers, collaborators and public servants of the Fascist government. The British army is undertaking the work, and is questioning the validity of the excavation, which is unpleasant and should not come under the responsibilities of the armed forces. The file includes mentions of other Istrian death pits and concentration camps in Yugoslavia, as well as images of returning prisoners.
