Do I need a reader's ticket?

You do not need a reader's ticket to use our most popular resources online or on microfilm/fiche.

You do need a reader's ticket to view documents that are only available in their original format, for example paper or parchment.

How do I get a reader's ticket?

Readers' tickets can be collected from the ticket collection desk in the Start Here area on the first floor. Upon collection, please show two forms of identification.

See opening times of the reader registration desk.

What can I do without a reader's ticket?

If you do not have a reader's ticket you can still use a huge variety of online resources and records on microfilm/fiche. The best way to start is to use our research guides.

How do I use my reader's ticket?

Once you have a reader's ticket, you can use it to order original documents on any of the public computers.

Your documents will arrive within about 45 minutes. They will be available to view either in the Document Reading Room (first floor) or the Map and Large Document Reading Room (second floor). You must produce your reader's ticket to get into these rooms.

Lost or stolen tickets

To replace a lost or stolen ticket, go to the reader registration desk on the first floor with two forms of identification from the lists on the right.
