The Written Heritage Science Lab uses scientific methods to analyse archival and library collections, supporting research, preservation planning, and access decision-making.
Our preferred route for providing external scientific support is through the Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science (RICHeS) programme. Where this is not appropriate, other routes may be explored.
Option 1: Explore RICHeS
If your project requires scientific analysis of written heritage materials, we strongly encourage you to explore RICHeS first. The programme provides funded access to heritage science facilities across the UK, including the Written Heritage Science Lab at The National Archives.
The National Archives' is proud to be involved in the RICHeS programme.
RICHeS applications are assessed against programme criteria, and not all requests will be eligible. We therefore recommend contacting us via the below form at an early stage to discuss scope and feasibility before submitting an application.
Option 2: If RICHeS is not the right fit
If your proposal does not align with RICHeS guidelines, or if its scope or timing falls outside the programme, we may still be able to explore whether there is a suitable way for the Written Heritage Science Lab to engage, subject to capacity and priorities.
