  10.0 p.m. III It is confirmed that the detachment of 149th Bde. holding GIRD Trench N. of Sunken Road in M.18.c. were driven out this evening by counter-attack. It is not certain whether Australians were also driven back. 1190

  10.53 p.m. III Following message received from 50th Division begins. B[attalio]n Commander of Right companies in GIRD Line reports that at 4.15 p.m. enemy started shelling GIRD LINE causing many casualties.

This was followed at 5.0 p.m. by a bombing attack from the N.W. and from direction of LEBARQUE. The two companies after the bombardment were too weak to repel these attacks and fell back to their original positions..  
At present only 1 off and 8 o.r. of the right company have reported themselves. Nothing is known of remainder. The Australians were attacked at same time and also fell back G994

  11.10 p.m. Anzac A m[essa]ge recd from left Divn timed 9.10 p.m. states that left bn has been driven back by strong enemy bombing attack about 6.0 p.m. from GIRD TRENCH to jumping off trench.  
Patrol have been sent forward to ascertain strength of enemy in GIRD TRENCH. It will be re-occupied by us if possible but deliberate attack without fresh troops is inadvisable. 1192
