Armenian refugees: Lord Mayor's Fund

Letter of appeal from the Armenian Refugees (Lord Mayor's) Fund, undated (c. October 1915).

Citing information passed on by the British consul at Batum about the appalling plight of Armenian refugees in Transcaucasia, this letter constitutes a heartfelt plea for donations to the Lord Mayor's Fund - a charitable organisation set up in Britain in 1915 to support victims of the Armenian massacres in Turkey. It uses the example of the 100,000 Belgian refugees who arrived in Britain during the autumn of 1914 - for whom 'it was deemed a considerable tax to organise relief and hospitality' - to emphasise the even more urgent need to support the 250,000 Armenians currently in the Russian Caucasus.
