Victoria Cross

Extract from the Victoria Cross (VC) register, 1900-44: list of VC awards made on 16 November 1914.

Just 633 members of the British armed forces were awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) during the First World War. This extract from the VC register provides information about some of the earliest wartime recipients. Lieutenant Maurice Dease, for example, was awarded the VC for his bravery at the Battle of Mons on 23 August 1914, when - despite serious wounds - 'he continued to control the fire of his machine guns... until all his men were shot.' Dease was one of three men in this list to be awarded the VC posthumously.
