Emma Almey: nurse's service record

Extracts from the service record of Emma Almey.

Emma Almey joined the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) in July 1916 and subsequently served in Salonika and England. The extracts shown here consist of a gratuity claim form, submitted to the War Office upon her resignation from the QAIMNS in April 1919, and a confidential report from June 1918, when she was employed at the military hospital in Purfleet, Essex. In this report the matron describes Sister Almey in glowing terms as 'an excellent surgical nurse... untiring in her attention to duty'. Her 'moral qualifications' - a standard point of reference in reports on women in the armed forces - are also described as 'good'.
