Zeppelin wreck

Photograph of the burned shell of a Zeppelin shot down over Essex, 24 September 1916.

Despite the fear that they evoked during the early stages of the war, Zeppelin air attacks on strategic targets in Britain were not hugely successful. The hulking airships offered enticingly large targets to pilots and anti-aircraft artillery. This photograph shows the wreck of an LZ33 Zeppelin shot down in Essex in September 1916. None of the crew survived.
