Salonika Front: troops taking quinine

Photograph of British troops in Salonika taking quinine to guard against malaria, undated.

The First World War was the first major war in which the number of deaths from combat outnumbered the number of deaths from disease. Nonetheless, particularly in the warmer climes of Africa, Gallipoli and the Middle East, potentially fatal infections remained an occupational hazard. This photograph shows British troops stationed in the Greek port of Salonika taking quinine to guard against malaria. At the time, quinine was still the only effective remedy for this disease.
