Russian war loan poster

Russian Provisional Government war poster, 1917.

The Russian war effort was thrown into disarray by the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II in March 1917. However, the Provisional Government that took power after the March Revolution was by no means defeatist. Indeed, led by the war minister, Alexander Kerensky, it aimed to pursue the war against the Central Powers with greater vigour. This poster for a war loan (the 'freedom loan'), in which an ordinary Russian soldier is pictured in front of a crowd waving flags with revolutionary slogans, thus constitutes a genuine - though ultimately futile - statement of intent.
