Rationing

Poster issued by the National War Savings Committee, 1916.

Although compulsory rationing was not introduced in Britain until the spring of 1918, government campaigns for 'economy in the household' were common from a much earlier stage in the war. In this poster, the need for the British people to 'economise in everything' is emphasised by a suitably patriotic quotation from the war secretary and national hero Lord Kitchener, who drowned on his way to Russia in June 1916.
