'Up civilians!' |

The government campaign for war loans
was second in patriotic fervour only to that organised for recruitment to
the armed forces. In this war savings poster, probably dating from 1918,
one of Britain's greatest military heroes, the Duke of Wellington, is pictured
beneath a patriotic injunction urging the public to give their financial
support to the war effort - either by purchasing government 'war bonds'
or by putting money towards a 'war savings certificate'. Catalogue reference: NSC 5/12 (c. 1918) Transcript |
