Alcohol

Extract from a 'report on drinking conditions among women and girls in Woolwich and district', undated.

The effect of alcohol consumption on wartime production levels was an important concern for the British government. This report, compiled for a Home Office committee charged with monitoring alcohol consumption among women and the young, comes to largely optimistic conclusions. Although more women were drinking in public houses in Woolwich and surrounding areas, the wartime 'dilution of liquor' and restricted opening hours ensured that their behaviour rarely got out of hand. The increase is largely put down to the loneliness and anxiety brought on by wartime conditions.
