Extract from various Fourth Army reports
on the Battle of the Somme, 16 November 1916. These reports are taken from 16 November 1916, just two days before the Battle of the Somme was called to a halt after British troops captured one of their first-day objectives, Beaumont Hamel. They reveal a largely unchanging military situation, punctuated by occasional new developments such as the downing of an enemy aeroplane or the capture (or loss) of a particular trench.
