Officers recommended for promotion after Jutland

Extract from the list of officers recommended for promotion due to their actions at the Battle of Jutland, 15 July 1916.

More than 6,000 British sailors died at the Battle of Jutland, which took place in difficult weather conditions that demanded excellent leadership qualities. The officers listed here were those recommended for promotion - from commander to captain or from lieutenant commander to commander. The 'note' attached to the recommendation for Reginald Plunkett of HMS Lion provides a revealing insight into the issues of hierarchy and seniority that governed Royal Navy promotions. Another interesting case is that of Paul Whitfield, who was captured by the Germans after his ship, HMS Nomad, was sunk during the battle.
