Report of the Mesopotamia Commission |

Extract from the report of the Mesopotamia
Commission, 1917. This particular section of the report published by the parliamentary commission investigating the Mesopotamia campaign in 1917 focused on the breakdown in medical support for British and Indian troops during the retreat down the River Tigris after the Battle of Ctesiphon (22-26 November 1915). It argued that official correspondence after the battle, such as the telegram sent by the commander of British forces in Mesopotamia, Sir John Nixon, glossed over the horrific conditions in which some wounded men - 'covered with dysentery' amidst 'dried stalactites of human faeces' - endured the journey to hospital ships at Basra.
