Charge by Coldstream Guards

Drawing in the Illustrated London News, captioned 'Go on, Lily Whites! The Coldstreamers in a great charge by the Guards on the Somme.'

During the second half of 1916, British newspapers such as the Illustrated London News reported extensively on the Battle of the Somme. This drawing, by R. Caton Woodville, shows troops from the Coldstream Guards - the oldest serving regular regiment in the British army - in action during the assault on Martinpuich and Corcelette on 15 September. The text accompanying the image (which is not reproduced here) invokes the spirit of the Battle of Agincourt and quotes at length the war correspondent Philip Gibbs, who concludes that the charging Guards 'fought grandly'.
