German dead at Guillemont

Photograph of German dead at a destroyed machine-gun post near Guillemont, September 1916.

British troops captured the village of Guillemont on 3 September 1916. September generally saw an improvement (albeit short-lived) in Allied fortunes at the Battle of the Somme, as the Germans were pushed back towards Bapaume and a number of other important locations (including Ginchy and Thiepval) were taken. Photographs such as this one, in which dead bodies could be clearly seen, were often - though by no means always - withheld from public viewing during the First World War.
