Battle of Amiens: diary entry

Extract from the diary of Robert Cude on the first day of the Battle of Amiens, August 1918.

Almost 28,000 German troops were killed or captured on the first day of the Battle of Amiens (8 August 1918). General Ludendorff famously described it as the 'black day' of the German army. This extract from the diary of Robert Cude, the chief runner to a brigadier general during the battle, captures a mood of triumph and optimism. Cude reports that 'Jerry is hopelessly routed' and that 'things are going A1'. He also describes the capture of a German trench, an action that yielded not only a German officer but also an enticing haul of food and other goods.
