Armistice celebrations

Photograph of a band playing to a crowd of people on Winchester High Street, 11.40 am, 11 November 1918.

News that Germany had signed the armistice at Compiègne on the morning of 11 November 1918 triggered widespread scenes of celebration in every Allied country. In this photograph, taken shortly after news of the cessation of hostilities had reached Winchester, the onlooking crowd has a generally restrained and even respectful appearance. Note the British and American flags hanging from a first-floor window above a draper's shop on the right.
