'Standard' 1901 Pattern De Dion-Bouton Voiturette

At £250, plus 18 guineas more if you wanted a hood, only the well off could afford a car like this. The best known caricature of the Edwardian motorist is Kenneth Grahame's description of Mr Toad in The Wind in the Willows:

He was Toad once more, Toad at his best and highest, Toad the terror, the traffic-queller, the Lord of the lone trail, before whom all must give way or be smitten into nothingness and everlasting night. He chanted as he flew, and the car responded with sonorous drone; the miles were eaten up under him as he sped he knew not whither, fulfilling his instincts, living his hour, reckless of what might come to him…

Toad was eventually sentenced to 3 years for furious driving and 15 years for insulting the police.
