The drift to the suburbs and out of overcrowded and unhealthy city centres was already well-established by 1901. Note the emphasis on Chingford as 'the healthiest' suburb of London. Chingford, which had a population of 4,373 in 1901, had more than tripled in size since 1881. Houses such as those advertised here, probably in the Connaught Road area, would fetch (at 2001 prices) between £275,000 and £325,000.
