Earl Russell's trial
Earl Russell's trial
Illustration of the bigamy trial of Earl Russell. Russell's American friend and lawyer E.D. Vanderlieth wrote to Russell on 20 July 1901 condemning the decision of the English courts not to recognise an American divorce: 'it may be justice in England but not in America, nor before God's High Footstool…in America your divorce is as valid as any ever decreed'. This letter is held at The National Archives under reference HO 144/951 pt.A62795.
