  20 Brazilian aeronaut Santos Dumont pilots a motor balloon from St. Cloud in Paris around the Eiffel Tower and back within half an hour, winning the Deutsche prize of 100,000 francs. The Times reports that he 'drove his balloon…as easily and dexterously as a competent jockey rides a well-trained horse'. More on air transport.
