The world in 2001?

This map, from the Daily Mail in 1901, predicts the loss of the British empire by 2001. It shows the USA controlling all of North and South America, Greenland and the Philippines; Russia ruling Asia, Turkey and China; and Australia and Africa as republics. The British empire has gone, though Ireland remains part of the UK. This map reflects continuing debate in Britain about the nature of British supremacy and how it could be sustained. Could human resources be exploited more efficiently to maintain (British) racial supremacy? What role should the dominions play? Was Britain's navy strong enough? Was Britain's dependence on imports too great a risk?
