The artist William Hogarth is famous for his pictures of London
street scenes, depicting the lives of both the rich and the poor.
Black people frequently appear in his work.
Here we can see a Black man obviously at ease with his peers in the
crowded London street of Hog Lane, Westminster. Hogarth captures the
reality of street life - a child eats scraps off the ground while
the overdressed rich ignore the squalor. This picture, entitled Noon,
is part of a series, Times of the Day.
