This painting is by Sir Peter Lely, principal painter to Charles
II. Lady Charlotte, aged eight, is seen with her Indian page, who
appears to be no more than six or seven years old. This is one of
the earliest representations of an Indian servant in art in Britain.
Charlotte was the illegitimate daughter of Charles II and his mistress,
Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland.
