The illustrations on this web page depicting life in Africa are
taken from the journals of Jean Barbot, who traded along the coast
of West Africa in the 1670s and 1680s.
This scene, in which Africans greet each other, probably shows a village
in the kingdom of ‘Ardres’ (Allada), lying between the
Volta river and Cape Lopez on the West African coast. At this time,
the local population had already been exposed to Dutch, French and
English traders.
