Introduction

This report was compiled by the Commission as part of a survey of the papers of British antiquaries which included scholars who worked in related fields. The report covers the smaller groups of papers held by the Griffith Institute as well as those which are yet to be listed.

The Griffith Institute was founded in 1939 following the wishes of Francis Llewellyn Griffith (1862-1934) who left a substantial part of his estate for this purpose. The core function of the Institute is to edit and publish the Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs Statues and Paintings. The Institute houses a collection of specialised Egyptological manuscripts which is the largest one of its kind in the world. There are some some seventy groups of Egyptological papers, including those of Howard Carter (1874-1939) which cover the Tut'ankhamun excavations. The Institute's very detailed web-site can be accessed via http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/Griffith.html.

The Commission is very grateful to Dr Jaromir Malek for granting access to the Institute's archive and catalogues from which the following report is compiled. All enquiries about these papers should be addressed to staff at the Griffith Institute quoting the references in square brackets.
