Letter by Nelson to William Marsden, Admiralty August 1805

The National Archives holds only one of Nelson’s official admirals' journals. This letter explains why, since Nelson was apparently unaware, such journals were kept or submitted to the Admiralty. More intriguingly however, is that the Admiralty had specifically requested Nelson to supply a journal so they could assess whether he had done his utmost to fall in with the escaped French fleet and carry out his service in a way they felt was acceptable.
