Letter from Horatio Nelson to Admiral, Earl of St Vincent, K.B. of 28 December 1798

Nelson’s despatch to St Vincent provides details of the evacuation of the Royal Family from Naples to Palermo. This was both a harrowing and onerous experience. Nelson was responsible for the Royal Family’s personal safety and their personal treasure estimated to be worth £2,500,000 (£175 million in today’s prices). It is also worth highlighting the value that Nelson placed on Emma Hamilton’s assistance during this evacuation which may have strengthened their friendship.
