Extract from Nelson’s journal on board HMS Theseus for 25 July 1797

This document extract shows Nelson’s courage in personally leading what was an ill fated land assault on Tenerife. It is unusual to think today that a naval officer would be leading such an attack. As always, leading by example, Nelson himself may have easily been killed, along with many others, in such a risky undertaking. Characteristically Nelson did not mention the life threatening wound that resulted in the loss of his right arm.
