Archive internships

We currently do not have any vacancies for archive internships.

Collection care internships

Our internships in collection care are for mid-course students and recent graduates in the field of conservation and preservation.

Internships are encouraged within all the department's areas of activity - it is possible to participate in just one or any combination of current projects. Please see the collection care pages to understand the kind of work we do.

Internships are for a minimum period of three months and up to a maximum of 12 months.

All interns will be supervised by a member of staff of the Collection Care department. They will be trained in emergency procedures as well as the use of specialist equipment and substances.

At the end of an internship, interns write a final report describing the projects they have worked on and what they have gained from their time at The National Archives.

How to apply

Applicants must either be enrolled in a post-secondary programme leading to a degree in conservation, conservation science, or a relevant field; or have completed appropriate studies within the last three years. Successful applicants will need to provide their own insurance.

There are two application deadlines per year:

  • 1 March for a start between September of that year and the following March.
  • 1 September for a start between March and September of the following year.

Please complete the application form and enclose a one-page statement detailing the skills and knowledge you hope to acquire during your time at The National Archives, and how the internship will enhance your career development.
