UK Crown bodies

This is a list of those public bodies which have Crown status, which means that material which they produce is subject to Crown copyright protection under Section 163 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988.

The Controller of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office (HMSO), a part of The National Archives, manages all copyrights owned by the Crown on Her Majesty’s behalf. You will find more on permissions and licensing for the re-use of these materials in our copyright guidance pages and the UK Government Licensing Framework section.

In some cases, certain Crown bodies (such as Trading Funds) have a delegation of authority from the Controller of HMSO to license the re-use of material they originate. In such cases re-users need to obtain permission from these bodies directly. All bodies with delegations of authority are subject to our Information Fair Trader Scheme (IFTS). We have provided a link to the appropriate IFTS information and contact details in each case.

For ease of reference, any organisation which has the words ‘Department’ or ‘Ministry’ as part of their title has been indexed under their main activity. For example, Department of Health appears under ‘H’ as Health, Department of; and Ministry of Defence appears under ‘D’ as Defence, Ministry of.

There is a wide range of public bodies which do not have Crown status. We have listed some of the larger organisations under non-Crown bodies, below. It is important to note that the list of non-Crown bodies is not definitive.
