Crime and Punishment (North East)
To what extent was Newcastle Gaol a typical 19th century prison?
In this workshop students will explore documents from Tyne and Wear Archives and the National Archives to find out about Newcastle Gaol and compare it to other 19th century prisons. Using a variety of documents including building plans, a prison rule book and individual criminal record files, they will find out about the gaol’s design, it’s staff and inmates, and it’s living and working conditions, and identify the ways in which it was similar to and if/how it differed from other British prisons at the time.
The workshop is led by an experienced history educator.
