 Sirs,​

I beg leave to invite your attention to a case in the Southwell Union of the Country of Notts.​

Mary Cook, whose husband has been lately transported for sheep stealing, is left with 4 young Children, one of them an infant, and requires Parish relief.​

She resides at present in the Parish of Arnold with her parents + her two eldest children can earn something at frame working.  She belongs to the Parish of Ossington, and when she made application for relief, this difficulty arose  – Arnold is just beyond the limits of the Southwell Union, and as by a late order, a person circumstanced as Mary Cook could not receive outdoor relief except she resided within the Union, there appeared to be no alternative, but to put the family in the workhouse, or to refuse them all assistance.​

Now in this case the family wd cost 11s a week in the Workhouse, + there seems to be no question of employing it as a test of real want.​

Out of the workhouse, if allowed to continue to live at Arnold the woman could be with her Parents + friends, within reach of frame work for her children, + she wd be quite content with 5s a week.​

I hope you will think this a case [wh]  might be properly excepted from the general Rule, + that you will give directions to allow Mary Cook out door relief, beyond the limits of the Union.​
