The Salvation Army was founded by Methodists William and Catherine Booth in 1865. As part of their Christian mission, they set up shelters for the homeless and ran soup kitchens. The name of the organisation was changed to the Salvation Army in 1878 and the movement was to spread across Britain and worldwide.
