Country house game

A design for a child’s cut-out game for a country house1882 , Catalogue ref: COPY 1/ 59 f258

Cut-out games like this were popular with children in the Victorian period. Colour printing had improved and these games were cheap to produce. Children cut out the images then placed the objects and characters “in” the grounds of this country house. Perhaps the game provides some insight into the wealth and lifestyle of the upper classes who lived away from the crowded, insanitary conditions of the industrial town.
