Frederick Adam Gehringer (duly sworn)
I am the Proprietor of 6 Little Pearl Street a Registered Common Lodging House. On Saturday 5th September about 7 oc[lock] (morning) I had a conversation with a man named Thomas Hewington in the kitchen and others about the deceased being stabbed. I said it was a shame as he was such an inoffensive man upon which Hewington said “I stabbed him” I again repeated it was a shame and he (Hewington) then said suppose it was an accident. I said I could not understand how an accident could have occurred in that manner. He said he was very sorry and miserable for what he had done both have lodged there on and off for some time. I never knew of any quarrel between them. Hewington afterwards said it was an accident. I did not inform the police. I did not know that I ought.
