Noor Khan

Noor Inayat Khan (1914 – 1944) Noor’s parents were Indian and American, on her father’s side she was a descended from the 18th Muslim ruler Mysore. She grew up in France and later London. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air force and was later recruited to SOE (Special Operations Executive) where she trained as a radio operator. In June 1943 she was sent to France to work for the French Resistance in Paris. She avoided capture but was eventually betrayed and imprisoned. In 1944 she was killed in Dachau concentration camp after refusing to give any information about the Allies. She was awarded the George Cross in 1949 for her bravery. (Catalogue ref: HS 9/836/5)
