Mary Wheatland

Photograph dated 1903 of Mary Wheatland (1835-1924), the ‘Bathing Woman of Bognor’.  Mary worked as a bathing machine operator and lifeguard in the seaside town from the age of 14 until her sixties. She was awarded various medals over the years for saving over thirty people from drowning. (Catalogue ref: Copy1/465)
