
We keep documents safe in our unusual looking building which has been specially designed to for this reason. It is made from concrete which is a very strong material.

Documents are also stored away from light, which can damage them. You can see in the photo above from when the Archives opened that the storage areas have very small windows to minimise the risk of this happening. Look up at them next time you go outside!
What other things can you see on the building which make it look safe and secure?

Documents used to be kept safe in chests made from wood and iron. The chest above from the 1500s was made of iron and has three unique key holes. To open it, three people with three different keys had to be there at the same time.
