A view of Wandsworth from the early 1900s

Jews Row in Battersea was just off York Road. In 1846 the railway from Falcon Bridge (now Clapham Junction) to Richmond opened. When it opened it ran 17 trains a day. Only four trains included 3rd class carriages, which would have made it difficult for working class people like William if they had to travel far for work.
