Sensory nature map

Are there trees, plants and green spaces near where you live? When you are out and about in your local area, collect as many different types of leaves as you can find. How would you describe their smell? What sound do they make when you crumple them? Are they soft or crispy?

Make a display of them or stick them on a map of your local area to show where you found them.

Colourful map without precise detail, features a river and lakes, rocks and woodlands, tracks and white houses with red roofs. Punctuated with old writing, difficult to read.

Sketch of the manor of Ashburton, Devon, from Ashburton to Buckland-in-the-Moor. England, 1605. Catalogue ref: MPB 1/7

All shapes and sizes

Everybody likes to make their home special. Look carefully at the buildings on the road where you live. Are they all the same? How many different shapes can you spot in each building?

What is each building made of? How many different materials can you name – brick, stone, cement, wood? Would they feel cold or warm to touch?

Sound poem

Make up a sound poem about what you can hear where you live. Listen carefully to all the noises outside and think up a word to describe each sound you hear.

For example:

‘I hear a car – VROOM,

I hear a bird – CHEEP, CHEEP, CHEEEEEP’

I hear a lorry – …’
