14 October 1962 An American U2 aircraft took photos of ballistic missiles on Cuba
16 October Shown the photos, Kennedy convened his Executive Committee advisers
19 October Further photos revealed more missile sites in preparation
22 October US military chiefs informed Kennedy that a single attack on the missile sites would not guarantee their destruction
22 October Kennedy announced a blockade of Cuba to prevent more Soviet missiles arriving
