This is a British cartoon published in the Daily Telegraph in January 1972.
Richard Nixon became US President in 1969. One of the main elements of his
election campaign was his determination to get the USA out of Vietnam.
He started investigating the possibility of negotiations in 1968, even before
he was elected.
One of the influences in this cartoon is a story from the Philippines in
1970. The Philippines were invaded by the Japanese in the Second World War.
In 1945 some Japanese troops were left behind. They continued fighting a guerrilla
war long after the war ended. The last one emerged from the jungle in 1970.
